AFTER THE LOSS: WHAT’S REINSURANCE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
After a brief description of reinsurance as a mechanism for mitigating insurers’risks and expanding capacity, and a discussion of basic principles of reinsurance law, the panel discussed reinsurers’ rights, obligations, and roles in the process of handling the underlying claims, reinsurers’ general interest in insurer’s underwriting guidelines and practices, and the possible—if infrequent—relationship between insureds and their insurance carriers’ reinsurers.
