News Sites Reining in Nasty User Comments – Robert A. Bertsche Quoted on CNN.com

The article discusses how some news websites are trying to reduce or eliminate offensive posts by requiring the commenter to provide identifying information. Many news outlets believe that people will think twice about their post if the veil of anonymity is lifted.

According to Prince Lobel media lawyer Rob Bertsche, “By allowing anonymous comments, you’re going to get things and information that otherwise would not come to light. For example, if a commenter is working at a company where criminal activity is taking place, there’s great social value in that person speaking out — and they’re far less likely to do so if they can’t post anonymously.”
