In order to address a rise in "anti-immigrant rhetoric and hate crimes targeting Latinos," on June 30, 2009, ADL (Anti-Defamation League) and LPN (Latino Professional Network) leaders held a luncheon at the Cambridge Street offices of Prince Lobel. This event served as a kickoff to the groups’ new Latino/Jewish Roundtable initiative. Attendees included Boston mayoral contenders Sam Yoon and Michael Flaherty, as well as consulate representatives from Israel and Ecuador.
The catalysts for creating this type of program are: the blaming of Mexican-Americans for swine flu, the verbal attacks on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, and the inflammatory statements made by a local radio talk show host.
