Last week, 1,500 copies of The Commons, a free community newspaper in Brattleboro, VT, were stolen off of news racks. Sure, the newspaper is free, but the theft resembled one-sixth of The Commons’ circulation and, in turn, deprived advertisers of value. When the police department was hesitant to launch an investigation, Prince Lobel media lawyers Rob Bertsche and Asya Calixto stepped in to remind them that theft of free newspapers is indeed a crime.
