The Watertown TAB & Press has published an update to their recent news article concerning the Town of Waterown (MA) and their refusal to provide the TAB & Press with the names of those who owe the town for unpaid parking tickets.
The town has officially turned down the newspaper’s Freedom of Information Act request for a list of the top ten parking ticket scofflaws. According to the town’s treasurer and collector, the town has no records to provide and that “they need only respond to requests for records that exist and in their custody.” The town uses an outside contractor for parking ticket management services.
Rob Bertsche told the TAB & Press that “municipal governments are required to provide contracted out information to the public just as much as they are required to provide information that’s in their offices.”
The TAB & Press is seeking an appeal of the town’s denial.
