Media and First Amendment Partner Jeffrey Pyle appeared in the Barnstable District Court on May 16, arguing on behalf of The Cape Cod Times for the unsealing of court documents relating to the April 12 killing of Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon. Pyle’s argument was successful, and on May 16, Barnstable District Judge Kathryn Hand agreed to terminate the impoundment of a police report that included previously-undisclosed text messages from the defendant, Thomas Latanowich, directly after the shooting. Addressing the concern that the release of court records might harm Latanowich’s ability to get a fair trial, Pyle argued that this was not likely, as the crime had already received both local and national coverage. “It’s adding one straw onto an already extremely tall haystack,” he said to The Cape Cod Times.
